Grant Featherston is one of Australia’s most recognised and respected designers.

A Pioneer of Modern Australian Design

Born in Geelong, Victoria (1922–1995), Grant Featherston was a self-taught designer with a background in glass and lighting. After serving in the army from 1940 to 1944, he returned to Melbourne and began designing furniture in 1947. In 1951, he created the first of his iconic plywood shell Contour chairs.

In 1956, Featherston opened the Featherston Contract Interiors showroom, and the following year began a 13-year consultancy with Aristoc Industries. Over the course of more than 30 years, he and his wife Mary designed a collection of timeless pieces that helped shape the landscape of Australian design.

Featherston’s work is defined by its simplicity and lightness. Influenced by nature and committed to sustainability, his design philosophy focused on achieving the most efficient form with the least material possible.

A Philosophy Ahead of Its Time

“The themes of sustainability, efficiency of form and environmental sensibility that Grant championed are more relevant than ever. He was ahead of his time in many respects, the designs featured in this collection are testament to the endurance of both his designs and this philosophy” — Mary Featherston

Reintroducing Australian Design Icons

The collection sees classics such as the Contour Series and the TC67 Talking Chair revitalised with contemporary fabric selections.

Models like the B230 Contour Armchair and the SCABF Scape Armchair, out of production for decades, are now being given a new lease on life.

In recognition of their place as some of the most significant works in Australian design history, and to protect their originality, Featherston’s designs have been officially registered with IP Australia.

Featherston pieces have been sought-after classics in Australian homes, galleries and private collections since the 1940s.

The collection features both classic, instantly recognisable pieces and long-dormant designs that have been revived for design aficionados to enjoy.

Responding to the continued interest in the brand, Grazia & Co, together with Mary Featherston and Gordon Mather Industries (GMI), are proud to present this outstanding collection of Featherston works, thoughtfully curated for contemporary homes and discerning collectors.

Each piece is hand crafted to the original specifications and a certificate of authenticity accompanies each piece.
